男子テニスの元世界ランク1位ジョン・マッケンローさんが、大規模な森林火災が続くオーストラリアのため寄付をすると発表した。
その条件は全豪オープン出場中のニック・キリオス選手が今後の試合で1セット獲得するたび、1000ドル払うというもの。
キリオス選手は1月21日に男子シングルス1回戦でロレンツォ・ソネゴ選手と対戦し、6-2、7-6、7-6で勝利した。
試合後のオンコートインタビューでインタビュアーを務めたマッケンローさんが、キリオス選手のセット獲得数に応じて寄付すると宣言。観客席から歓声が起きた。

テニス界に広がる支援の輪 選手が次々に寄付を表明
2019年9月より多発化し、いまなお続いている森林火災では1000万ヘクタール以上の森林が焼失し、生態系にも大きな影響が出ている。大量の煙は空気を汚し、全豪オープンでは予選に出場したスロベニアの選手が激しく咳き込み棄権した。
オーストラリア出身のキリオス選手は、自身のツイッターで「火災の影響を受けた人たちへの支援を始める。この夏に出場する大会すべてでサービスエース1本ごとに200ドル寄付する」と発表していた。

支援の輪はテニス界に広がっている。ツアー屈指のビッグサーバーとして有名なジョン・イズナー選手は、「エース1本ごとに100ドル、賞金の25％を寄付する」と発表した。
